Bio
Marc De Mey has been professor of Cognitive Science at the Philosophy department of Ghent University from where he retired in 2005. He is still responsible there for « Historical and Contemporary Theories of Vision: Perspectives and Perception », a course within Postgraduate Studies in Logic, History and Philosophy of Science. From October 2006 on, he will be director of VLAC (Vlaams Academisch Centrum), a center for advanced studies at the KVAB (Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België), the Royal Academy in Brussels. VLAC is a member of NETIAS, the international network of institutes for advanced studies. He is author of The Cognitive Paradigm: An Integrated Understanding of Scientific Development (University of Chicago Press, 1992). A scholar of the dynamics of conceptual systems as well as an analyst of specific discoveries, he is currently exploring the perspective paradigm and the study of visual perception. His three-dimensional computer reconstructions of paintings (Masaccio and Van Eyck) and scientific discoveries (Kepler), realized together with Wim De Boever, Gitte Callaert and Patrick Seurinck, illustrate the intertwined nature of science and art.
